There is a book by Bierlein, (there are two initials that I can't remember); it is a book about religion seen through many ways. One is through the mythological point of view. He explains, how religions go through transitions just like any other type of institution. Bierlein describes the changes, adaptations, transformations that judaism went through, primarily due to the influence of the surrounding people and therefore religion. I believe that this book would be one that can help you with this transformation that began with hebrews coming out of Egypt, the concepts brought with them after 400 years of egyptian influence.

Well Islam I believe stems from Ishmael. He was separated from Abraham and sent off with his mother. Judaism and Christianity. Well, when Jesus appeared as the Messiah and established Christianity, not all Jews followed so there's your split there.
