Splitting the rent when living with 3 or more people in a household?

My husband and I, may be moving into a place with another person. What is a fair way of splitting the rent?





If we move into a two bedroom place, we (husband and I) will be occupying one bedroom, and the other single person will be occupying the other bedroom. Do we split the rent in thirds, or in half?





If there were 3 bedrooms (each with or own), splitting the rent in thirds wouldnt be a problem. Any utilities would be split in thirds also.





But with 2 bedrooms, 2 people in one room and one in the other room. Do you split the rent in half, and the utilities split in thirds? Ultimately the married couple are not occupying an more room or rooms than the single person.

If both rooms are the same size than the rent should be split in two........come on now you are married so it counts as one. And as far as the utilities I think they should be split in half as well. It sounds fair to me.Splitting the rent when living with 3 or more people in a household?

Assuming there is no garage or carport involved to share, I believe everything should be 1/3: Even if you and husband share one bedroom, you don't necessarily go in and out of the toilet and other rooms together. So if it is a matter of privacy and availability, the other person can't expect the kitchen, living room or bathroom to be vacant and fully available just because one of you left a room. Of course utilities would be 1/3 mainly because you don't share the water (toilet, shower), lights, etc. with your husband and you would have more laundry (if washing machine).





If there is a carport or garage, that could change things. I had three tenants share an apartment with one garage space. They argued over it, and finally decided that the party with the smallest bedroom should get it. Of course the roomates were still disappointed but accepted the situation as the fairest.
The way my roommates and I have done it in the past is split the rent according to bedrooms. Therefore, in your situation, the rent would be split into half. Utilities, however, would be split between all roommates.
