What's the practical difference between freezing and splitting panes in Excel?

I split, my friend freezes. What's the difference? I can't see any difference in practice, they both fix part of the sheet while you move over the rest of it?What's the practical difference between freezing and splitting panes in Excel?
Freeze Pane will lock any row(s) above the active cell and any column(s) to the left of the cell. In this manner you can keep row and column headings visible while scolling thru the sheet.

You can split the sheet in half vertically or horizontally by dragging the split bar (located above the vertical scroll bar or to the right of the horizontal scroll bar). If you select Split from the Window menu you will divide the sheet into quarters. This allows you to view different sections of the sheet at the same time. You can for example enter a value in one area and see the result from a formula in a different section. What's the practical difference between freezing and splitting panes in Excel?
